Established in 2019, AIIMS Madurai is one of the newest additions to India's network of premier autonomous medical institutes under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. It operates from a temporary campus at the Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai, a major tertiary care center, providing immediate clinical immersion for its students. The institute currently offers the flagship MBBS program, with plans to expand into postgraduate and super-specialty courses. Its academic model integrates the foundational AIIMS curriculum with the high patient volume and diverse pathology of a long-established government hospital. The permanent campus is under construction in Thoppur, designed to be a 750-bedded facility with a built-up area of nearly 2.5 lakh square meters. This future site will feature a dedicated medical college complex, nursing college, residential blocks, and extensive research laboratories, aiming to serve as a comprehensive healthcare hub for southern Tamil Nadu.
